  1. Communist movement in Cambodia (Kampuchea)
  2. that formed the largest opposition group to
  3. the US-backed regime led by Lon Nol 1970-75.
  4. By 1974 the Khmer Rouge controlled the
  5. countryside, and in 1975 the capital, Phnom
  6. Penh, was captured and Sihanouk installed as
  7. head of state. Internal disagreements led to
  8. the creation of the Pol Pot government 1976
  9. and mass deportations and executions. From
  10. 1978, when Vietnam invaded the country, the
  11. Khmer Rouge conducted a guerrilla campaign
  12. against the Vietnamese forces. Pol Pot
  13. retired as military leader 1985 and was
  14. succeeded by the more moderate Khieu Samphan.
  15. Folllowing the withdrawal of Vietnamese
  16. forces in 1989, the Khmer Rouge continued its
  17. warfare against the Vietnamese-backed
  18. government.
